Dear Cindy:
I am a high school junior and I am starting to look into careers. I volunteer at a hospital and like the health care field, but I do not want to be a nurse or doctor. I like solving problems and working with people, but I don't want to sit at a computer all of the time. How can I combine all of these interests into a real job?
People Person in Kentucky
Dear People Person:
It sounds like you have great experience with volunteering and diverse interests. You will have many options and the opportunity to work with people in most jobs and not just sit at a computer. Technical Support sounds like a good fit for you, check out more details about that job under IT Career Center on the CyberCareers website. Under IT is Everywhere you will find a section on Medical Technology with health care related IT jobs. The CyberCareers IT Interest Inventory can also start pointing you in the right direction.
In addition, talk to people in the computer department at the hospital. Ask them questions about working with other people and how much they sit at a computer. Your high school counselor is another person to talk to about career options.

Dear Cindy:
I love fashion design. My friends and I are always looking at the latest designs and what's new. I want to work in this
exciting field helping make new designs every year, putting on shows and working with the models and other designers. My
teachers/parents, even you, think that I should go into computers. Why? What's interesting about that?
Curious in Texas
Dear Curious,
It sounds like you have an exciting career in mind. First of all, make sure you know what kinds of jobs there are in the
world of fashion design and what skills you'll need to succeed. See if this is the right field for you by talking to your
counselor or teacher and doing some Web research.
Here are some school websites that describe the kinds of work you might do and what courses you'd need to
take:FIDM,
and AIULA.
Also, read about what fashion designers do, where they work, the kind of schedule they have to keep and what
skills are important by visiting the U.S. Department of Labor webpage on
design:http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos090.htm. All
of these websites indicate that computer aided design is becoming an expected skill for fashion design school
graduates. Computer aided design is part of the fashion design curriculum. In addition to design software, you'll
also have to be able to word processing software like Word to write papers on the computer and presentation
software like Power Point to make presentations. So, be prepared to use the computer for lots of things in the
fashion design. Remember, you will be more successful if you're armed with IT skills, matter what field you're
interested in. If there are courses at your high school that give these kinds of skills, then take advantage of
them. Set yourself up for success!
