Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS)
Business-IT Pathways Educator Certification Project

Participation in the MOUS Business-IT Pathways Educator Certification Project allows educational institutions to offer marketable credentials to students who are entering the workforce. The program also offers a standardized curriculum for teaching computer applications, premised on the development of skills valued in both education and industry.

Educator-to-Educator (E2E)
and Washington State's Office of Superintendent of Public
Instruction (OSPI) are proud sponsors of the first state-wide
MOUS Certification Project

Washington remains one of the most competitive states for knowledgeable skilled workers who are current and relevant in integrated business-IT skills. As our world becomes more and more technology-focused, we must take steps to ensure our educators have the necessary skills to succeed in the classroom.
Cindy Agnew, Business & Marketing Pathway Supervisor for OSPI.

Why MOUS?
  • The Microsoft Office User Specialist (MOUS) program is the only comprehensive certification program designed to validate desktop computer skills using Microsoft Office applications.
  • MOUS proves computer literacy, measures proficiency, improves productivity and identifies opportunities for skills enhancement.
  • A Microsoft Office User Specialist certificate is a valuable credential recognized worldwide.
  • MOUS certification helps business professionals get better jobs through verifying productivity on Microsoft Office applications.
  • Personal satisfaction and validation of your desktop computing abilities.
  • MOUS Certification increases credibility with students, local industry, and fellow educators.
  • The market place wants MOUS certified employees (your students).
  • Higher Education wants MOUS certified students.
In the constantly changing face of the marketplace, with new products and services changing almost daily, everyone is forced to continually learn new skills. Those who can't learn new skills will be left behind in jobs that will change or disappear altogether.
- Paul E. Patton, Governor of Kentucky

What to Expect from a MOUS Certification Workshop
  • Teachers just like you are your MOUS trainers. They have collectively come together to bring you the best of their experience, teaching skills, and ability to effectively make your MOUS certification process the best one possible.
  • The exams are not a written test. Instead, they feature real-world assignments that are based on the way you actually use your computer.
  • The MOUS program offers two levels of certification: Core and Expert. The Washington State MOUS project is providing training in, and tests on, MS Word 2000 (Core and Expert) and MS Excel 2000 (Core.)
  • A typical exam takes about an hour to complete.
  • Use Prosofttraining.com's ComputerPREP training books, SAM software, and Skill Measure by Course Technology to enhance your knowledge and practice your desktop computing skills.

First Assess Your Skills
  • Each teacher needs to assess his or her existing competency-base of Word and Excel 2000. Consider the amount of time, within the classroom; you have used Microsoft Word and Excel 2000. The level of user-interaction with the software is an important consideration, as well as the amount of time you have used the Microsoft Office application.
  • Normally, the core certification exams test your ability to easily complete a wide variety of standard software tasks. The expert certification exam test your ability to finish more complicated tasks requiring sophisticated formatting, as well as the normal business skills.
Next, you need to determine if the one-day or two-day session is right for you.

The One-Day Session ($80), plus testing fee of $120, total session price $200
The one-day MOUS certification training workshop is for the teacher who is already very familiar, proficient, and comfortable with Microsoft Word and Excel software. The aim of this workshop is to have teachers, after review sessions, take practice exams in Microsoft Word (core and expert) and Excel (core). The expectation is that after passing, the teacher can then take and pass the actual exams in the near future at a official testing center. Learning how to incorporate the MOUS certification processes, ComputerPREP courseware, and SAM testing software within the high school classroom is an additional highlight of this workshop.

The Two-Day Session ($160), plus testing fee of $120, total session price $280
The two-day MOUS certification training workshop is for the teacher who is already fairly proficient and comfortable with Microsoft Word and Excel software. This is a more comprehensive workshop for teachers who want more review and practice sessions to ensure success when testing in Microsoft Word (core and expert) and Excel (core). The expectation is that after passing, the teacher can then take and pass the actual exams in the near future at a official testing center. Learning how to incorporate the MOUS certification processes, ComputerPREP courseware, and SAM testing software within the high school classroom is an additional highlight of the workshop.
