What does a Technical Support Person Do?
  • According to the 1999 Information Technology Association of America, jobs in Technical Support comprise 33% of all IT jobs in the U.S.
  • Who are these people? They are the people you call when you're having problems with your computer. They are also the people who keep the computers running smoothly in the background in offices and at schools.
  • If a Technical Support representatives solves problems over the phone, they may work at a help desk, or a call center. If a Technical Support representative maintains and updates software and hardware, they may work in just about any company or school in the U.S.


What's the work like?
  • The work of a Technical Support representative can be stressful. They have to talk to people who are often upset because their computers are not working.
  • If you're going to be a Tech Support person, it's a good idea to enjoy working with people and to have good skills in helping people calm down.
  • Not all Technical Support work involves being on the phone with upset users. Some Tech Support representatives work in offices after hours and install software or hardware for users.


What does it take to be a Technical Support Representative?
  • You should have:
    • Good problem solving skills
    • Good communication skills
    • Patience
    • Good question asking skills
    • Knowledge of the software and hardware your users use.
    • Experience working with customers, for instance as a retail sales clerk, can be very helpful.
