Expanding Diversity:
CyberCareers for the Net Generation
The NWCET spearheads initiatives and activities to attract and retain women and underrepresented populations in to the Information Technology (IT) field. The cornerstone of the NWCET's efforts is our CyberCareers for the Net Generation (www.cybercareers.org) suite of products.
The CyberCareers video focuses on emphasizing the appeal of IT and projecting a positive image of IT careers. For teachers, www.cybercareers.org, includes lesson plans, learning activities, student worksheets, suggested evaluations and tips on finding and using local resources. The website also serves students. They can find a comprehensive orientation to IT careers, familiarize themselves with the IT virtual job finder, take a quiz to help find the ideal IT job, and get glimpses in to the lives of IT professionals.
NWCET takes CyberCareers on the road! In collaboration with the Technical Access Foundation (www.techaccess.org), we offer classroom visits. Our presentations feature a screening of the video followed by exploration of web resources and talks from guest speakers who are part of the Technical Teens program at TAF.
Expanding Your Horizons
Every year, for the past three years, the NWCET has collaborated with the American Association of University Women's Expanding Your Horizons Program. NWCET staff makes presentations and facilitates hands-on workshops on IT career education for middle and high school girls, their parents, teachers, and counselors.
