Internships
Internships are one way that many of our IT professionals interviewed for the video got their first experience in the world of IT.

What is an internship?
An internship is a temporary position that a student has within a company. Through an internship students gain experience, skills and learn more about what they want to do after they graduate. In many cases internships provide the contacts a student needs to get a job after graduation.

How do you get an IT internship?
You need to first gain some basic experience in IT. Take classes at your school. Play with computers that you have access to./td>

Who gets IT internships?
Stafford Mays, Director of Internship Programs at Microsoft, looks for people who:
  • Have good grades, but not necessarily the best grades.
  • Show involvement in extracurricular activities like school clubs and sports.
  • Have a passion for learning new things.
  • Have good basic reading, writing, arithmetic and communication skills.

To find and apply for an internship, you should have a resume and you should be prepared to talk to people about why you want the internship. Talk to your school guidance counselor about writing a resume and interviewing. Explore the following sites to get more information on the kinds of IT internships out there.
